Position Overview:

This senior level position will lead the product design and development of new and innovative energy storage products incorporating systems thinking and systems engineering.  This position requires a hands-on individual with the initiative, innovation and judgment to develop cutting-edge energy storage products and to serve as the primary lead for defining the architecture and engineering design for those products.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead a cross-organizational effort to design, develop and implement robust designs with proper verification, validation and design for manufacturability for seamless product introduction. Understanding of materials and processes used in product design; plastics, metal fabrication, glass, etc. is essential.
  • Product design responsibility to include components/assemblies (BOM, initial and life cycle costs), ability to analyze, create, problem solve and apply best design practices to ensure successful product introduction and product life cycle using tools such as: stage gate development process, risk assessments, design reviews, Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA), and proper design verification and validation testing.
  • Perform highly complex activities relating to the design and integration of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices and systems, including catalyst materials, electrolysis systems, and fluid flow, mass and heat transfer, and high and low pressure gas-handling and storage systems.
  • Establish and execute a process for the technology transfer of platforms and ideas from the concept/feasibility phase to development under design control and creation and protection of intellectual property.
  • Work with suppliers and internal resources to develop analytical models and working prototypes of new products and prototype modifications in light of test results, and verify that these prototypes meet the required product specifications.
  • Ensure that the product can be produced reliably and consistently with cost and performance objectives.
  • Develop project specification with colleagues, often including those from other disciplines.
  • Assess and solve complex problems relating to manufacturing and system integration including potential suppliers and customers.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • Ph.D., or MS in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • 7 to 10 years of related work experience including relevant product development and introduction success.
  • Electromechanical and/or electrochemical system design experience (advanced battery or energy storage experience a plus).
  • CAD experience, with all of the analytic tools for fluid flow, and thermal performance.
  • Ability to conceptualize new designs from scratch and a demonstrated track record of innovation.
  • Experience in tolerance analysis of assemblies and detail parts.
  • Excellent understanding of material properties.
  • Experience with compressed hydrogen, hydrogen safety, and relevant codes and standards is preferred.
